Once upon a time a few writers who loved literary readings and loved San Francisco, left the City by the Bay to live in the Big Apple. They loved New York and relished in its thriving literary scene, but, alas, the pined for Litquake, San Francisco’s phenomenal literary festival.
Then one day it occurred to them: why not shake up the New York literary scene with a little East Coast Litquake of their own? Any thus, Lit Crawl New York was born…
The Lit Crawl is a madcap concept created by San Francisco’s literary festival, Litquake (litquake.org), back in 2004. It’s a bar crawl, with literature! The inaugural Lit Crawl NYC took place in September 2008 and was wildly popular, spurring its lit-loving, NY-loving crawlers to make it an annual event, growing, in true Lit Crawl tradition, with every year.
Litquake’s NYC Lit Crawl is sponsored by Harper Perennial, Opium Magazine and the Literary Death Match.
Litquake, San Francisco’s annual literary festival, was founded by Bay Area writers in order to put on a week-long literary spectacle for book lovers, complete with cutting-edge panels, unique cross-media events, and hundreds of readings. Organizers created the festival to represent a lively and inclusive overview of San Francisco’s thriving contemporary literary scene and to foster interest in literature, perpetuate a sense of literary community as well as host a vibrant forum for Bay Area writing as a complement to the city’s music, film, and cultural festivals. Dates: 10/3-11, 2008. www.litquake.org
